The Criminal Injuries Compensation Tribunal was originally set up to provide compensation for persons who were injured as a result of a violent crime (and in certain other limited instances).
Due to economic circumstances, the Scheme has been severely curtailed in recent years. If you have been the victim of a crime since 1972 you may be entitled to compensation from the Tribunal. The Tribunal will award compensation for out of pocket expenses, including loss of earnings and medical expenses. Compensation for pain and suffering is not awarded for the victims of crime since 1986. The victims in those circumstances are only entitled to the out of pocket expenses.
If you have a close relative who has been unlawfully killed, you may be entitled to claim compensation from the Tribunal.
If you are a prison officer who has been unlawfully injured during the course of your duties, you may be entitled to claim compensation. Compensation for pain and suffering is available for prison officers, if they fall within the ambit of the Scheme.
Cantillons Solicitors has successfully represented victims of sexual abuse and obtained general damages for them (for pain and suffering) even where the abuse occurred many years ago. This has become far more difficult in recent years.
It is important to note that there are time limits within which applications can be lodged and the current time limit is a period of three months. The Tribunal has discretion to extend the time but it is safer to apply within the timescale as the Tribunal may refuse to extend the time.

* In contentious business, a Solicitor may not calculate fees or other charges as a percentage or proportion of any award or settlement. Many Personal Injury Solicitors portray themselves as no win no fee Solicitors. This terms can be misleading and it is essential that you discuss fees with the Personal Injury Solicitor you ultimately choose. At Cantillons Solicitors, we are entirely transparent.
