Substantial settlement for woman who was wrongfully discharged from a Cork hospital with abnormal blood test results

Marian Fogarty, Ger Falvey and the medical negligence team at Cantillons are delighted to have secured significant compensation for a client who was afforded substandard care while attending the A & E Department of a Cork based hospital.
The expert evidence in our client’s case concluded that there was a failure to look at and act on the results of the blood tests that had been performed after our client’s arrival at the Emergency Department of the hospital and to interpret the abnormal results of the blood tests in light of our client’s clinical symptoms prior to her wrongful discharge from the A & E Department. The hospital had admitted liability in the case mid-way through the proceedings.
As a result of the premature discharge from the A & E Department of the hospital, our client’s infection spread untreated and she developed other serious complications. She was admitted to another hospital, a number of days later, where she required urgent treatment for the evolving complications including high risk emergency surgery which our experts were of the view would not have been required if she had been treated correctly and on time at the first hospital. This settlement will give our client some closure from her avoidable ordeal and will allow her to move on with her life.
