Significant Settlement negotiated for lady following a failure to diagnose a Pulmonary Embolism (PE) and Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)

Posted in News on Thursday, February 22nd, 2018

Orla Kelly and the Medical Negligence Team were instructed by a lady who suffered chest symptoms shortly after the birth of her third child.   She attended A&E and was discharged with a chest infection. For some reason they failed to consider the diagnosis of a Pulmonary Embolism (PE) and/or a Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT).  At that stage she had in fact developed both a PE and DVT which would have been detected and treated if the appropriate investigations were carried out.  Her chest symptoms continued at home and pain in her leg increased.  She re-attended the hospital and eventually the DVT and later the PE were diagnosed and treatment commenced.  At this late stage significant, permanent and lasting damage had been done to both her lungs and her legs.

This damage affects many aspects of her daily life including her mobility and her ability to work.  In addition she had to endure a lengthy stay in hospital following the birth of her newborn baby.  Thankfully she received excellent care from her family.   However, she continues to this day to be unable to work and has suffered permanent physical injury and distress.

Ultimately a settlement was negotiated to the satisfaction of this deserving lady and her family.     No money will turn back the time or give her back those crucial early days with her newborn baby.  However, it is hoped that this compensation will allow this lady to purchase crucial ongoing medical therapy, aids and support to enable her have a better quality of life.
