Case settled for woman who had a placenta lobe left inside her post an elective Caesarean Section

Posted in News on Friday, May 17th, 2019

Karen Kearney of the Medical Negligence Team at Cantillons Solicitors settled a claim for substantial damages for a woman in a case where a cotyledon of the placenta was retained at the time of the Caesarean Section.

In this case, the Plaintiff had had a complicated obstetric history and had 2 previous Caesarean Sections.  This, her third pregnancy, was uncomplicated.    She underwent an elective Caesarean Section.  No complications were noted in the surgery or the delivery and she was transferred to the recovery room.  She was then noted to have blood clots which were removed and she was brought to the High Dependency Unit. She had a scan and was told that her uterus was clear.  She lost a lot of blood and was given a blood transfusion. She was unable to hold her gorgeous baby daughter for the first 24 hours of her life.

Following her discharge home from the hospital, she continued to bleed and had constant pain in her abdomen and back. She returned to the same hospital where she had delivered her baby daughter.   A doctor examined her and told her that the bleeding was just her period returning.   The Plaintiff knew herself that this was not the case.   Eventually, some five weeks post-delivery of her baby, the Plaintiff passed the retained products of conception.   This was an extremely traumatic event for the Plaintiff.    She was very frightened, although she felt better from a physical point of view.

The Plaintiff brought a case for the physical and psychological injuries she suffered.

The case was settled by the hospital some three years following these events.
