Cyclists take a hit*

Posted in [Blog Personal Injury Litigation ] on Thursday, September 18th, 2014

A cyclist who is not seen runs the risk of being struck by a motorist  and reflective clothing is the answer to being seen in the hours of darkness.  Wearing reflective clothing is a simple and effective way to make sure you are clearly seen by other road users when cycling.  Cyclists should also add reflective strips to their knees and ankles so the pedalling movement makes light from the headlights bounce back to the driver making it easier to register that they are present on the road.  Cyclists should have lights on their bike.  Without same, you are putting your life at risk by making it extremely difficult for other road-users to see you.Motorists and cyclists are subject to the same road codes, meaning that cyclists have to observe the rules and courtesies expected of motorised vehicles on the road and in turn cyclists need to be treated with similar respect by motorists. When cyclists add these strategic reflective markings it leads to a large increase in visibility, which in turn leads motorists recognising a cyclist on the road much earlier.  This simple step can make cycling much safer.Cycling causes little harm to others and it is not a hazardous activity.  The actions of those engaged in a hazardous activity (i.e. driving) can put cyclists at risk.If you are knocked off your bike and suffered an injury you may well be entitled to be compensated. We, Cantillons Solicitors, can advise you. If the accident happened in night and if you were not wearing reflective clothing, it may well be argued that you contributed to the accident.   Thus, not alone will you have taken a hit to your body but you will also take a hit in your pocket. This is because a court may well reduce the amount of money that you would otherwise receive by way of compensation because of the failure to wear reflective clothing.   The process of bringing such a claim can be quite complex. At Cantillons Solicitors we can take the stress out of dealing with the consequences of an accident. We will meet with you and take detailed instructions and thereafter guide you through the entire process to ensure that you receive the best possible compensation that you deserve.  We will guide you through the process step by step.Contact us at Cantillons Solicitors at +353 (0)21 -4275673 or info@cantillons.com if you would like road traffic accident claims advice.* In contentious business, a solicitor may not calculate fees or other charges as a percentage of any award or settlement.
