Concerns About Genetic Test Results During Fertility Treatment

Posted in [Blog] on Wednesday, July 22nd, 2026

Cantillons Solicitors have received enquiries from patients who have concerns about genetic test results provided during fertility treatment or following miscarriage.

Genetic testing may be used at several stages of a fertility journey. It can include:

  1. carrier screening or karyotyping of prospective parents;
  2. preimplantation genetic testing of embryos; and
  3. testing of fetal or pregnancy tissue following miscarriage.

Depending on the circumstances, genetic testing may help to identify chromosomal abnormalities or inherited genetic conditions. The results can influence important decisions about fertility treatment, embryo selection and transfer, future reproductive planning, and the management of a pregnancy.

Patients and families place considerable trust in the accuracy, interpretation, and communication of these results. Where a result may be inaccurate, incomplete, misinterpreted, or incorrectly communicated, the consequences can be significant. They may include inappropriate or delayed treatment, lost reproductive opportunities, unnecessary procedures, additional expense, and substantial emotional distress.

Patients who have contacted Cantillons Solicitors have reasons to question the accuracy of genetic test results they received. We are investigating the individual circumstances of those cases.

If you are concerned about a genetic test result, you should first discuss the result with your treating doctor or an appropriately qualified genetics specialist. You may also wish to obtain legal advice about whether the testing, interpretation, communication, or clinical response met the appropriate standard of care.
